How do you get you're footage from your camera to your computer?
Firewire camera right?
So what do you do to protect the heads in your camera from wear and tear?
DV decks are outragously expensive.
Also does your camera play back and capture tapes that were shot on other brand cameras?

Yup!

You buy a DV deck.

Oh. Then find another DV camera, one for filming, one for playback/capturing.
Also does your camera play back and capture tapes that were shot on other brand cameras?
Yep yep. My cheapo Panasonic tapes work on a Canon XM2. And vice versa. Whoopee! AS long they're both Mini DV camera's, it'll work. Same as two standard 8mm tapes would work, as long as the the cameras both take 8mm.

Hey there.
"So what do you do to protect the heads in your camera from wear and tear?"
To be honest I wouldnt even worry about that. I mean how long do you think you are going to be using that one camera? The life span on these product is very short anyway. I know they cost a lot of money. And I know it stings. Also lets face it... Within a very short time the format your shooting on will become old news. Either the Technology will move on. Or you will. Thats the sad fact.
Also how much are you actually going to be constantly running those head on that camera? Im assuming your editing online... So you're going to be running your footage once through and once back out. And the actual time the camera will be running on set is going to be minimal.
If it really is a worry I would just do what these guys said. Buy a cheep as chip dv camera and use that as a deck. If only for rewinding tapes.
Despin out.

Ya. I have had to swap MiniDV tapes and D8 tapes between brands all the time, and never had a problem.
